Synopsis
He was trouble from the start, but I couldn’t resist. She was the best kind of trouble. The kind that was so wrong, it felt right.
I’ve tried and failed to stay away from him. I’ve done everything in my power to make her mine and keep her.
He’s almost impossible to say no to. She never tells me yes.
We’re always fighting. When we’re not fighting, we’re… well… making up.
He makes me laugh so hard. I miss her laugh the most.
I’m a liar. She knows the truth, but won’t admit it.
Sometimes, I wish I’d never met him. I wish we could meet all over again. I’d do better.
His sweet girlfriend knows. The guy she’s with is a fool.
I’ll never love anyone like I love him. She doesn’t love me enough to choose us.
It was the wrong place. It was the wrong time.
It should have been him. It will always be her.

I have been waiting a while to get my hands on Bait by my friend, M. Mabie.  Since she first announced she was writing it, then with the release of the teasers...simply put I could not wait to get my hands on it!  For those of you who don't know, Ms. Mabie was a blogger turned author.  Her first book, Fade In, was not only hysterical but the story line itself was really good as well.  However, even knowing I liked her writing style I absolutely was not prepared for Blake and Casey's story in Bait.  To say it was freaking amazing is almost an understatement!  I finished this book over 4 days ago and I literally still can't get the details, or the characters out of my head, it's even "haunting" me in my dreams!

I'm gonna go ahead and tell you, this story has some major cheating in it, so if you are anti stories with unfaithfulness then maybe you should steer clear of this one, but then again, I'm not one who condones cheating either, but damn if I didn't enjoy reading about the mess Blake constantly puts herself in.  Once I got started in the story, vested in the characters, honestly I couldn't put it down.  Blake, the heroine, is dating a guy back home when she visits her friend in San Franciso.  While she "loves" Grant, she has reservations, she just doesn't know if he is the one she wants to tie herself down with.  It's as though her inner conscious is pushing her to sow a few oats, be a little crazy.  Of course in my mind I'm screaming if you're having those feelings he's not "the one" for you, because when you find "the one," your conscious, your heart, your soul, your everything are perfectly aligned.  Anyways, while visiting her best friend, she meets Casey and they instantly hit it off.  Sparks fly and neither one can say no.  But what happens when Blake's night of craziness is over and she must attempt to return to normal life?

I'm not going to lie, Blake's character really frustrated me.  Throughout most of my time with her I was on the verge pulling my hair out, or throwing my kindle and punching something all at the same time!  Since the story is seamlessly told from alternating POV it was easy for me to forget the other character can't see/hear all that I can.  While I know where each person's feelings and heart truly lie in reality neither one of them knows what the other's intentions are.  Once I calmed down and remembered some of my frustrations eased, but I still maintain she could have prevented so much angst and turmoil, but then again if she had done things differently we wouldn't have had such an awesome story in Bait.  In the end I can honestly say as a whole I do like Blake.  She is funny, carefree and at her core she desperately wants true happiness, but is scared.  She is on the road to finding herself, finding who and what allows her to be the person she was meant to be, she's just taken the bumpy road.  I think most of us can relate.

Casey has without a doubt made it on my top book boyfriends list!  He makes me laugh, makes me cry, is handsome, romantic and a smart ass for good measure.  I adore him and I will never eat cheesecake or drink coffee the same again!  My heart broke time and time again for him, to the point I couldn't help but think was somewhat of a glutton for punishment.  He knows how to invoke some major reactions from Blake, and in doing so he absolutely brings out the best in her, when she is with him she can be her true self instead the person others want her to be.  Moments with Casey are so freeing to Blake, and as a reader when I was caught up in those moments with the two of them I just knew they were meant to be.  But life isn't easy and taking a leap of faith, placing your whole trust in another person is even more difficult.

I have tried to stay away from specifics in an effort not to spoil the story as well as the experience of reading this story.  The title is perfect and when you learn the meaning behind it, you will proclaim what I did---that is genius!  If you enjoy the kind of books which make you want to devour them in one sitting while at the same time leaving you scared to finish because you are too nervous as to what will happen next then you absolutely need to one click Bait today.  This book will without a doubt open the floodgates to pretty much every emotion you can imagine.  Yes it ends without finishing the story but what else do you expect from Part 1 of a series!  I am counting down the days until Sail releases while still nursing one heck of a book hangover.  M. Mabie needs to hurry and finish Part 2 like yesterday!

Synopsis

She can track down the world's most dangerous drug lords, hack into any computer, and kill a man in fifteen different ways—but when she comes face-to-face with the only man who’s ever held her heart, it might be her most dangerous mission yet... Or is it?

Sloan Walker. Dr. Felicia Santora. Agent L-55.
Three very different personas, three very different names, but all have one thing in common. They’re all controlled, acted out, and lived by one woman.

Her past has been long forgotten. Ten years have gone by since someone remembered the girl she used to be. The young girl with the big-brown eyes and beautiful dreams of happiness, dreams of love. She now lives a clandestine life. A life filled with top-secret missions and covert assignments. Only a handful of people know the true nature of her job. Her safety is constantly being pushed towards the brink of life-threatening danger.

Then one day someone unexpectedly steps back into her life…

A man who once owned her mind, body, and soul.
A man who held her heart in the palm of his hand.

He remembers. He knows.

And this knowledge could threaten everything she’s worked so hard for. Nixon West is as intelligent as they come and his Navy SEAL training has made him one of the most dangerous weapons in the United States Military. The moment she reappeared into his life he promised himself that he wouldn't let her go.

But the true question is…what extreme lengths will Nix go to for her?

She will soon face another mission.

And it will test everything.

Time never seems all that important until your life hangs in the balance.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock…

Review
4.5 of 5 stars

I was intrigued by the synopsis of Covertly Strong and was really excited to read this book by NA Alcorn.  I fell in love with her as an author when I read her Infamous Series and wondered how this story would be since it is totally different.  Fortunately, I am happy to report she can literally write anything and do it great!

The story begins with a story of young love between Sloan and Nix while they are in high school.  I really loved getting to know the characters while they are young and experiencing emotions for the first time.  I felt so bad for them, when things took a turn south.  The characters are the same as me so I can totally remember a life without cell phones, constant contact and other conveniences we take for granted now.

Once we are back in present day, we see the changes both characters have gone through.  Sloan is a total bad ass.  I love her character.  It is refreshing to have such a strong, independent, sassy lead character.  She works for the CIA, so she can handle pretty much anything, except maybe Nixon West.

Navy SEAL, Nixon "Nix" West, never leaves me disappointed.  I loved his character at 16 and even more so at 30 something.  He is a fighter and once he finds Sloan, there is no way he is backing down and losing her again.  Did I mention he is hot, gorgeous and a Navy SEAL?!

The only thing I would have changed about this book is that it is narrated and I think I would have enjoyed it even more if it had been told from the characters POV.  It is really just a personal preference for me.  In conclusion, if you like hot, steamy novels with plenty of action and drama, you should one click this bad boy right now!  You will thank me for the introduction to Nix later!   I can't wait until the next book is released.  Well done, Ms. Alcorn!

N. A. Alcorn is the author of the best-selling in humorous fiction, Infamous Series. She is excited to take this leap into the Romantic Suspense genre and hopes that you enjoy Nix & Sloan's story as much as she did writing it. She would love to hear from you!
