Life works in mysterious ways.
Four years ago I became known as the girl with cancer.
I refuse to cry.
And I refuse to give in.
A relationship with a man is the last thing I’m looking for right now, but one night with Parker changes everything. He is persistent, and he knows what he wants. Me.
He doesn’t treat me like I’m fragile.
But he doesn’t know, and I’m not ready to tell him.
What if it changes everything?
Tragedy found me when I was seventeen.
Love found me when I was twenty-one.
My name is Aundrea McCall, and this is my journey.

Blog Tour and Review: Life's A Cappella, by Yessi Smith

Synopsis
I want to tell you how great my life was. How I lived without regrets. With constant laughter. Without any tears. I want to tell you how I lived each moment to the fullest. How each breath I took was fresh and full of life. With eagerness. Without any fear.
I want to tell you all of that, but then my story would be masked with lies and not worth telling.
My life didn’t start until I left my past. And I left everything. My mother, my friends, my name.
My new name, the name everyone knows me by is Erin Lewis.

Four years after finding the courage to leave her hometown in Alabama, Erin is finally happy with where her life has led her. Not only is she secure in her environment, but the relationships she has formed center her, making her forget how damaged she once was. Before she can fully settle into her new life, her past crashes into her present, unraveling a set of events that destroy the very foundation she has built her new life on.

Review
4 out of 5 stars

I was asked to review this ARC for my honest opinion.

I really was not sure what to expect when I started this book, but the prologue itself sucked me in immediately.  Anytime I read that someone has left everything about their old life including their name, I want to know more.

Life A Capella is the story of Erin Lewis.  She is quite the main character and I found myself wanting to smack her for her stubbornness to ruin her own life at times, but the more I read, the more I understood her.  Erin is an extremely independent and strong woman.  She has worked through college and is almost ready to graduate as a nurse and make something out of herself that no one would think possible, including Erin.  I love her determination and attitude.

Trent is introduced pretty early in the book and is really good for Erin.  He seems to have the perfect life from the outside but really he is just great at living in the moment and taking what you get and making the best of it.  I love his character.

Some books are really difficult to write reviews without spoilers, this is one of them for me.  I will say that buckle up and prepare for a roller coaster ride!  Fall in love with some amazing characters such as Shayna, Camille and Sofia and get to reading!

If you are looking for a typical boy meets girl throw in some nonsense drama and live happily ever after, you need to stop and not read this book.  It is so much more than your typical New Adult Romance.  It has a gut wrenching story.  But that is why I loved it.  It is always so refreshing to read books that are about so much more than typical love stories.  It really was a breath of fresh air.

Synopsis
I met Sarah Kate Erickson when I was 21 years old. I was lucky enough to keep her for seven years before a tragic accident stole her from me. She didn’t die, but sometimes I think it would have been easier if she had.
I lived in a haze for those four years after the accident. Catering to her every need, even though she hated the very sight of my face. I tried to hold on to her and the future that we were supposed to build together. But you can’t hold on to someone that doesn’t exist anymore.
It wasn’t until I met Jesse Addison, a barista at the local coffee shop, that I realized I didn’t just lose Sarah that tragic night, I lost myself as well. Jesse taught me how to let go of the past and learn to love again. But what happens when your past haunts your present and the woman you used to love refuses to accept the woman you can’t live without?

Excerpt
"Shall we make a little bet?" I ask, twirling my thumbs like an evil madman. "Aren't you sick of losing yet?" She laughs so hard at her own joke, she almost rolls out of the chair. Her reaction alone is enough to make me laugh right along with her. This girl is drunk...and beautiful. And drunk. And sexy as hell. And drunk. And so very fuckable. Did I mention drunk? She isn't in the danger zone, where she is going to be hating her very existence tomorrow. She's in that loose-lipped-say-things-that-will-make-you-cringe-the-next-day stage. I would be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying the hell out of seeing her in this state. Jesse always seems to have a filter when she talks to me. It's as if, she analyzes every word in her mind twelve times before actually spitting out a sentence. Since she started drinking, she hasn't stopped talking. She has officially made the leap from best friend’s little sister, to woman I want to fuck. Jesus, what the hell am I saying? Am I drunk too? "So, is that a yes or no to the bet?" I smile, glancing down and catch a glimpse of her peaked chilled nipples. "You cold, Jess?" I ask, nodding down at her nipples noticeably showing thorough her skimpy excuse for a dress. I watch her eyes travel down her own body and her cheeks immediately redden. Oh shit! I really am drunk! Why the fuck would I say that to her? Better yet, when the hell did I lose my filter tonight? Oh God, what else have I said to her without thinking? I frantically try to think of a way to moonwalk out of this conversation. She's uncomfortable, and I'm mortified. We both know it too. It's written all over our faces, but in our drunken states, neither one of us can think of anything to say.

Review
4.25 out of 5 stars

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I knew from the synopsis alone this was going to be a good book, the kind I just couldn't wait to get my hands on and I'm happy to say I wasn't wrong.  Powerfully written, this book will bring up emotions and force you to consider scenarios in a way you've never imagined.  It's an intense, powerful story, about destiny, fate and how easily in the blink of an eye life changes course.

As the story begins you meet Brett and Sarah, two young individuals who after meeting at the bar one night hit things off and begin this whirlwind, quirky, sexy relationship.  Soon after they are married and living happily ever after, making plans for their future including naming unborn children and enjoying the beauty of life and the happiness from being head over heels in love.  One night, one tragic car accident completely changes the course of their lives.  Brett is left mourning the loss of his wife as he tried to provide and love the woman who walked away from the accident and who wants him out of her life completely.

So how does one move forward in the wake of tragedy?  Living each day in a fog, hoping one day to wake up and things will be back to the way they were is how Brett's been coping for the past 4 years.  It isn't until his friendship with Jesse, a waitress from the diner he frequents daily for breakfast, turns romantic.  Her presence in his life is like a breath of fresh air and slowly he learns what it's like to be happy, to look forward to getting up in the morning, to actually live.  He's finally ready to move on with his life but making it happen doesn't come easily especially since when the woman he's legally married to and who has wanted him out of her life for years suddenly won't let go.

Aly Martinez has done a wonderful job telling the stories of not only Brett and Sarah but also Jesse and Caleb.  So much so that I felt emotionally connected to each one of them and I was easily able to understand the emotions behind their actions, even the crazy ones!

Brett is this really hot incredibly decent man who will do and has done everything possible to uphold his marriage vows.  He's faced struggle after struggle but keeps on loving Sarah even if she's no longer the woman he married.  I completely respected him.  I also really loved the way his character was written, being able to see the emotional turmoil run its course as he struggles with letting go of Sarah and falling in love with Jesse.  He's so scared to move forward, to love someone so completely again, to take the risk of loosing them and himself all over.  I really felt this compassion towards him.

I have to admit in the beginning I wasn't sure how I felt about Jesse.  She came across so naive, innocent and definitely like she was trying to hard.  But, being around Brett she starts letting her guard down and then I was blown away with how mature and strong of a character she really was.  She was gentle and compassionate towards the difficult situation, yet she refuses to be a doormat and will not settle for any less.  So of course I came to respect her and they way she is able to not only help Brett heal but also Caleb.

Caleb, you cannot talk about characters and not mention him.  He's this tough guy who even though his life is on a different course still cares about his best friend, still cares about the woman he blames, is still madly in love with his fiancé and becomes this big brother figure for Jesse.  I love how he could put Brett in his place and I couldn't help but appreciate his methods for helping Brett and Jesse see the "bigger picture."

If there is one thing I'm sure of it's that Aly Martinez can tell a story.  She will suck you in and before you know it you've read the whole book.  While I was able to see a few things before they unfolded she really surprised be with the last 10%.  So, take it from me you need to one-click this debut novel, snuggle into the couch and take a ride on this book journey!

Launch Day Blitz: Saving Quinton, by Jessica Sorensen

Synopsis
Nova Reed can't forget him-Quinton Carter, the boy with the honey-brown eyes who made her realize she deserved more than an empty life. His pain was so similar to her own. But Nova has been coming to terms with her past and healing, while Quinton is out there somewhere, sinking deeper. She's determined to find him and help him . . . before it's too late.

Nova has haunted his dreams for nearly a year-but Quinton never thought a sweet, kind person like her would care enough about a person like him. To Quinton, a dark, dangerous life is exactly what he deserves. And Nova has no place in it. But Nova has followed him to Las Vegas, and now he must do whatever it takes to keep her away, to maintain his self-imposed punishment for the unforgivable things he's done. But there's one flaw in his plan: Nova isn't going anywhere . . .

Excerpt
I suddenly realize that I’m in my room. Awake. And Nova’s here. With me. My thoughts start racing as I try to recollect what happened. I was planning on those guys beating me to death. Why didn’t that happen? Because it was too easy? Do I deserve not to be let off so easy—do I deserve worse than death? But if that’s true then why’s Nova here?
“What are you doing here?” It’s painful to talk, but I force the words to leave my mouth. “Or am I dreaming?”
She repositions her hand on my cheek, but doesn’t pull away, the startled look in her eyes diminishing. “You’re not dreaming…you were unconscious but…are you okay?” She seems nervous and it reminds me of how innocent and good she is, and how she shouldn’t be here in the crack house that I call home.
“Why are you here?” I ask, my voice feeble as I try to sit up, but my arms aren’t working and I fall right back down on the mattress.
“I came here to see you,” she replies, absent-mindedly touching her lips, and I wonder if I really kissed her or if I was imagining it.
She stares at me with her fingers on her lips and it’s uncomfortable because she’s really looking at me. I’ve been so used to people looking through me, as if I were a ghost, seeing the drugs, the person that I am now, the worthlessness all over me, instead of who I used to be. I’ve forgotten what it’s like to be really looked at and for a split second I enjoy it. Then she looks away and I feel like I’m dying, my brain registering the pain in my legs, arms, chest—everywhere. And I’m crashing. Badly. My hands start to shake, my heart rate picking up as soon as I realize this.
“Go put some ice in a plastic bag,” she says, snapping her fingers at someone.
I hear a mutter and then Tristan steps into my view. He glances down at me and the haziness in his eyes lets me know he’s high on something, but I’m glad he’s at least here and it doesn’t look like he’s been beaten up. “Dude, you look like shit,” he tells me with a dopey-ass grin.
“I feel like shit,” I mutter, managing to get my hand up to my face to rub my eyes. “You look like you got away.”
“I did, and you should have run with me, you dumbass…I thought you were for a while until I realized I was alone.” Tristan chuckles under his breath. “Wait until you see yourself in a mirror.”
His amusement seems to piss Nova off and she gets to her feet, tugging the bottoms of her shorts down, fury burning in her eyes. “Go get a fucking bag to put the ice in,” she says, not yelling, but her tone is cold, abrupt, harsh, and she sort of shoves him. This isn’t the Nova I remember at all and she kind of scares me.
She seems to scare Tristan, too, who surrenders with his hands in front of him and backs toward the doorway. “Fine. Jesus, Nova. You don’t have to get crazy about it.”
“You haven’t even begun to see me get crazy,” she snaps, pointing at the door. “Now go get a damn bag.”
After Tristan leaves, she turns to the doorway and says, “What am I going to do?”
I can’t see who she’s talking to and it makes me wonder who the hell is in here. Delilah? I doubt it, since I don’t think she’d be asking Delilah that question.
“I don’t know,” someone replies. I still can’t see who it is, but I can tell the voice belongs to a female and I hate how excited I get over the fact that Nova’s not here with a guy.
Suddenly a girl with black hair and big blue eyes steps in. “He looks…” She assesses me, then looks at Nova. “He looks like he needs to go to a hospital.”
“No hospitals,” I croak. “I don’t have the cash to pay for that.” And I don’t deserve to heal so easily. I should suffer for getting up and running away from my death.
Nova stares down at me with reluctance. “Quinton, I really think you need to go to a hospital.” She kneels back down on the mattress, sweeping her long brown hair to the side as she leans over me. Her fingers gently enfold my wrist and, moving slowly, she bends my arm so I can get a good view of my hand. It’s twice the size it normally is and my skin is purple and blue. Even where her fingers are, the skin is swollen and raw, and it seems like her touch should hurt, but all I can feel is heat—her heat. God, I’ve missed her heat. I’ve spent the last year wrapped up in coldness, feeling the numbness of drugs and sex with random women and now she’s here and I feel like I’m burning up.
“It’s just a bruise,” I say, not looking at my hand, but at her. I want to hold her, hug her, kiss her, touch her, but I also want her to go away. Stay. Leave. Right. Wrong. Lexi. Nova. Guilt.
Guilt.
Guilt.
Guilt.
It was all your fault.

Review
4 out of 5 stars

Since the moment I finished Breaking Nova I couldn't wait to get my hands on book #2.  As soon as the ARC came across my kindle I immediately dove in.  I needed to know what happened to Nova and Quinton.  Was she able to stay clean and start living, does she ever forget about Quinton and the summer that changed her life?  Is Quinton still struggling with the guilt of his car accident, is he still using, does he forget about Nova?  Will these two ever get past their demons and have a chance at true happiness not only as individuals but will they give in to the chemistry and draw towards one another and become the great couple we so desperately want them to be?

I'm going to start by saying this book is not an easy read and if you thought  Breaking Nova was dark it has nothing on this sequel.  It's been almost a year since Nova chose to turn away from drugs, move forward from Landon's suicide and take back control of her life.  After confessing to her mother and getting the help she so desperately needed she went back to college a stronger person.  While at school Nova connected with Lea, who is not only her best friend and roommate but someone who looks out for her, making sure she doesn't get in too deep and relapse.  She volunteers at a suicide hotline and finds comfort in being able to help others because while she may be better emotionally she is still haunted by the fact she wasn't able to help Landon.  She has also found a passion in making videos and entries from herself have become therapeutic.  However, while she has so many good things going for her now she still cannot get Quinton Carter out of her mind.  He saved her, made her feel alive and she wants to return the favor.

If we thought Quinton was struggling in book #1 we were mistaken because it was only the tip of the iceberg.  A year later and things have gone from bad to worse.  Now living in Las Vegas he's dealing and using harder drugs and lots of nameless women to drown out the memories always haunting him.  While he knows eventually this lifestyle will be the death of him, he gladly welcomes it and even wishes for it.  But the good guy, the one from before the accident, he's still buried deep within and we see glimpses of him as he tries to get his cousin Tristan to clean up his life.  Quinton feels responsible for Tristan and is always looking out for him, trying to keep him safe.  And even though his life is in a constant drug induced high he cannot get Nova Reed off of his mind.  So what happens when she shows up on his doorstep mere minutes from almost being beaten to death?

I really feel Nova grew so much between the first book and this one.  I liked seeing her as a strong, confident young woman.  I respected her drive to help Quinton and even more so when she walked away, albeit forced strongly, because she was in too deep.  This wasn't an easy journey for Nova and it isn't going to be an easy one to read, but I honestly think that's the point.

Saving Quniton really drives home the point that drugs are evil and when they get a hold of another person absolutely nothing or no one is going to be able to force an individual to give them up, that's got to come from the user.  They have to want to be saved and Quinton, who wishes he had died with Ryder and Lexi, doesn't want to be saved.  He feels responsible for ruining so many lives and thinks his punishment should also be death.  He also doesn't think he deserves having people who love him, which includes Nova, even though she has the power to make him feel things the drugs never will.  Nova is really the only person he truly wants in his life, but who he will force out because he doesn't want to disrespect Lexi and because he thinks she deserves more than he will ever be able to give.

I'm going to say it again, the Nova series is definitely not a love story.  Yes, it's obvious these two have chemistry and would make an incredible couple, but it's not that easy or simple.  This series is about struggling, dealing with guilt, finding redemption, choosing to survive, choosing to live life and through all this you'll find yourself hoping they will both eventually make the decision to leave the darkness behind, live life in the light and eventually find even more happiness in one another!

Well done Jessica Sorensen for writing another gut wrenching installment in the lives of Nova and Quinton!  Honestly, Jessica has written this story in a way that you cannot help but feel each of the characters struggles and emotional turmoil.  This story is at times frustrating and depressing, but every now and then we get a glimpse into what these two could be like if they could ever break the chains holding them back.  I'm glad I stumbled upon this series and while this wasn't a typical feel-good book and the ending definitely leaves things unsettled I'm looking forward to book #3.

Excerpt
It would seem that it was too early for Elias and me to stop being afraid and on edge about what happened. I admit it. But really what we were doing was looking for any way out of that mind-set, because if we didn’t, it would’ve killed us. We just wanted to live life. And, well, it’s easy to forget about the significant things when you find other things to cover it up. Partying quickly became our means of salvation, the way out that we longed for. We learned fast how to replace misery and fear with happiness and enjoyment, and with drugs and alcohol. We couldn’t afford much ourselves, and the last thing we wanted to do was waste what little money we did have on shit like that, but we got by with freebies usually. A joint passed around a room. A group of partygoers already lit on alcohol, offering to buy the table the next round. And occasionally guys would buy me drinks when they thought I was alone.
Our first night hitting the bars and nightclubs in Florida was the first domino to fall in a swirling maze of hundreds of dominoes.
And every fucking one of them would later prove to be a bigger mistake than the last.
“Hey, that’s our song!” I said over the music bumping through the speakers inside the club.
I grabbed Elias by the wrist and tugged. He slid down from the bar stool and hit the dance floor with me. He had always been a hot dancer, and it helped that he had the body for it. But usually, it took a few drinks for him to loosen up enough to dance in public. He wasn’t afraid of it; he just never cared for it much.
Even that started to change with our new lifestyle.
“Since when did this become our song?” he shouted over the music. I danced my way around, putting my back to him, raising my arms up and around both sides of his neck.
He ground his hips against me from behind, his fingers splayed against my thighs.
“Since that time at Matt’s party, remember?”
The beat picked up, and his grinding hips moved with it flawlessly. I about fucking died. The boy could dance.
I danced back around, facing him again, moving my upper body in a lithe, swaying motion against his.
“Oh yeah, I remember that night,” he said, leaning toward my ear. “But if I recall, after we danced to it in front of everyone, you left with Dane Weatherby.”
“Dane was just a friend,” I countered. And he was just a friend. “I was his shoulder to cry on that night. Nothing more. But you and me, we had the whole room. We owned it!”
Elias grinned and fit my hips in the palms of his hands, his long fingers spread like claws as he grinded against me some more.
He was so getting laid tonight.
“I guess we did, huh?” he said with a grin.
Suddenly Elias snatched me forward, his arm around my waist, and pulled me out of the path of a tipsy couple barreling through the crowd.
“Oh, sorry about that, man!” the guy said.
He was as tall as a tree and had short brown hair buzzed around the back. He grabbed hold of a strawberry-blonde woman’s elbow to keep her from falling over. She laughed and fell into his arms on purpose. Her huge boobs bulged into view from the force of his arm, which he held across her chest.
“I think I’ve had too much,” she said, raising her wine cooler out in front of her and then happily taking another drink.
The guy apologized again. And again. I wondered if he was just too drunk to remember he had already gotten that much out of the way.
“It’s all right,” Elias said, still holding me around the waist. “No harm done.”
We started to walk away from the dance floor and back toward the bar, but we only got halfway before the couple came up behind us.
“I’ve never seen you in here before,” the guy said.
“You must come here a lot, then,” I said, still being pulled along by my fingers. “To remember every face in a place this populated.”
A small part of me was worried he’d seen my face on a Most Wanted poster somewhere. But it was just the paranoia kicking in.
“We’re here every weekend,” the girl said.
She never stopped smiling. Neither of them did. They wore permanent, drunken smiles.
We finally made it back to the bar. Elias put his hands on my hips and lifted me onto the stool. He then sat on the empty stool next to me.
“I’m Anthony,” the guy introduced himself. “And this is Cristina.” He smelled of musk cologne.
I started to show them the same courtesy, but Elias jumped in a second before. “I’m John and this is my fiancée, Julia.”
Fiancée? That certainly got my attention. So much so that I had already forgotten the fake name he gave me.
“You live around here?” Anthony probed. He leaned against the bar next to an empty bar stool rather than sit. Cristina, who I assumed was his girlfriend, continued to use him as her makeshift crutch.
“No, we’re from—”
“—Indiana,” Elias jumped in.
I narrowed my eyes at him secretly from the side.
He softened his baby-blues, as if to say, Sorry, babe.
Instant forgiveness. He was in the right, though, because I had been about to say Georgia, just as I had been a second away from telling them our real names.
I didn’t know if I’d ever get used to this covert lifestyle of lies and highways and shitty motel rooms. But Elias was with me, and that made it all OK.

Review
4 out of 5 stars

Every since I picked up a book written by J.A. Redmerski I have been hooked on her writing and characters, The Edge of Never was the first book I read that got me started on the NA band wagon and sucked me into the indie author world.  Since then I have read all of J.A’s books and can honestly say she is a fabulous author.  I was asked to participate in the blog tour and review Song of the Fireflies by Forever Romance.  Honestly, I was really concerned and although I knew I would probably end up loving the book I was really hesitant to begin this one.  If you have read The Edge of Always you were introduced to Bray and Elias during a beach party that Camryn and Andrew attend.  I hated the scene in that book because it sort of marred my view of Andrew and Camryn and it felt so out in left field for me.  That being said, I was not sure I was gonna like these new characters, but I love J.A so much that I just dove into this book with my eyes wide open.

J.A. can really paint an amazing picture with words and I love how you can experience such strong emotions with her characters.  She really is just a fantastic storyteller.  The story of Bray and Elias begins with memories of their childhood and morphs into a story of unending love and support.  Elias and Bray have a long history beginning at a young age.  Elias loves Bray and wants to have a true relationship with her but Bray runs out of fear.  Once things finally seem like they are on the right track, unforeseen circumstances force them to do some really crazy and probably stupid things.

Bray has many dark issues that she deals with in this story and Elias being the supportive and loving person he is gets sucked into her mess.  But I love that about him.  He just loves Bray the way she is and he never tries to make her feel bad about being herself or attempts to make her change.  Elias just wants to show Bray love in any way that she needs to see it.  He is a really caring and sweet character that I loved.

Bray is a runner.  She likes to live life in denial and running from the truth because she thinks it will make life easier but in reality it just makes it more difficult.  She is such a sweet person but it is hard to read about some of the subject matter in this book.  It is real life and is not what you read to escape reality if you just want a happy go lucky book.  I think that is what makes books by J.A. Redmerski great though, she doesn’t like to write about things that are not realistic. It might not be pretty but she writes things that are real and I love her for it.

Will Bray and Elias survive all the struggles that life throws at them or will they give up on life and each other?  Go check it out and read for yourself to see what happens!

I received a review copy from Gallery in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say this novella is a really fun read!  The gang (Max, Bennett, Will and Henry) are in Las Vegas over Valentine's Day for a guy's bachelor weekend before Bennett and Chloe tie the knot.  They start the evening off in one of Johnny French's exclusive clubs with the guys pressuring Bennett to man up and accept a lap dance!  When he finally caves to the guys his dread turns into the ultimate surprise and suddenly the weekend just got more interesting.

This time around the story is told strictly from Bennett and Max's perspectives and what I enjoyed most was their back and forth banter and getting a deeper look into their friendship.  In the past we've known they were friends who met at Uni but getting to see them interact as friends was a real treat and I found myself liking their characters even more

Of course as with all the Beautiful Series books there is plenty of hot sex as the both Max and Bennett find was to sneak off and be with their women.  Its obvious these guys are head over heels in love with their women.  Also, because it's a novella and because Max/Sara and Bennett/Chloe are established couples there really wasn't any conflict, just a really good time in Las Vegas with guys being guys.  I really didn't have a feel for Will for but this book sets up his story in Beautiful Player nicely and this guy is hilarious!  He has no problem calling Max and Bennett out for being whipped nor does he miss a chance to pull a prank.  I cannot wait to see what kind of woman will ultimately be his ball buster!!

If you're a fan of the Beautiful Series you definitely don't want to miss this novella.  There's love, passion, pranks and tons of moments that will have you laughing out loud.
