THE CONSEQUENCE OF SEDUCTION
By:  Rachel Van Dyken
Page Numbers Source ISBN: 1503953017
Publisher: Skyscape
Publication Date: February 9, 2016

From New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken.
Reid Emory has never had reason to question his luck with the ladies. As the owner of a lethal set of aqua-blue eyes and a devastating grin, this Hollywood heartthrob always brings his A game…but lately his luck seems to have run out. The actor is in need of some help, and there’s only one person he can trust to take his love life—and his career—to an explosive new level.
Jordan Litwright’s newest client is trying her patience. As a publicist, she’s more than content to stay in the background and let others shine. But when a publicity stunt backfires, she suddenly finds herself thrust into the spotlight—as Reid’s new love interest. And while other men usually overlook her, Reid is focusing in with laserlike intensity. There’s no denying they have serious chemistry.
But once Reid breaks into the big time, can they turn their made-for-the-media romance into a forever love?

EXCERPT:

I wasn’t nervous. Please. The nervous guy was always played by a dude who had no fashion sense, had never kissed a girl, and thought that foreplay was an actual play—in baseball.
I had killer fashion.
Had kissed tons of girls—even secured my first by the age of four from a six-year-old riding the bus to school.
And foreplay was my specialty. I like to think that some men are just gifted in that area—not to boast, but I’m one of them.
Oh, and I was a hell of a baseball player.
So that weird, shaky feeling currently residing in my stomach, slithering its way up my chest? Heartburn.
I popped two Tums.
“Hey, you okay?” Jordan asked. Her big brown eyes were makeup free—making them look even prettier—more natural. She’d given up on her hair so it was wildly cascading in every direction known to mankind, giving her a sex kitten look I wasn’t at all comfortable her sporting outside my apartment.
“Yeah.” I coughed. “Heartburn.”
“Weird. I wonder why you have heartburn after all those shots, five slices of pizza, and three glasses of red wine?”
I grinned. “Beats me.”
She rolled her eyes and grabbed the remote from my hand.
“What are you doing?” I asked calmly, trying to keep my voice from shaking.
“Changing the channel?” she answered without looking at me. “The movie ended an hour ago and you usually go to bed at eleven, so . . .”
“But this is date night.”
“Uh-huh, and now date night is over. I’ll tell you what.” She turned and tucked her legs beneath her. “Since you’re new at this whole dating thing, I’ll give you a free pass and let you in on a little secret.”
“I’m listening.” Okay, so I was trying to listen while my eyes zeroed in on her low-cut blouse and fringes of the black lacy bra that was peeking from beneath. Focus. Focus. Focus. Did she have pizza sauce on her breast?
“When girls come home from a date, they don’t take a hot shower and run their hands all over their body moaning and groaning and replaying every touch, every caress, every kiss.”
Can’t. Look. Away. I leaned forward. Yup, definitely pizza sauce. “Well, that’s disappointing.”
“Usually, they pour themselves a glass of wine, toss off their tall heels, turn on the TV, put on their sweats, and read while New Girl plays in the background.”
How was it possible she wasn’t aware she had food on her chest?
“Reid, are you listening?”
“Of course I am!” I nodded. “Wine, heels, TV, books, New Girl.” I know, neat trick, right? Just pull the details out of what they said and repeat them. Works nine times out of ten. Unless you’re Max. If you’re Max, you usually just get punched, because he tends to brag about the fact he remembered in the first place.
“What?” Jordan looked down. “What are you staring at?”
“Sauce.”
“Huh?”
“Sauce.” I pointed. “Right there.”
Jordan rolled her eyes. “I’m not falling for that trick where you point and I look down and you hit me in the face. How old are you, ten?”
“No, seriously.” I moved forward. “You have pizza sauce right here.” I swiped it with my thumb and then licked it off.
“That should be gross,” she breathed.
“I know.”
“But it was kind of sexy.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying ‘I know.’”
I smirked. “Sorry . . . oh, look, you have something right here too.”
This time she did look down. And my ten-year-old self cheered as I knocked her in the chin and said, “Gotcha.”
Defeated, her shoulders slumped forward. “I deserved that.”
“I couldn’t help myself.” I watched in a hypnotic trance as her tongue sneaked out and teased her lower lip. It was the perfect moment for a kiss, but the line had been . . . skewed. I wasn’t sure if it was okay, in the privacy of my apartment, to actually kiss her. I mean, I’d kissed her, but this felt different, more intimate.
“This is the part”—Jordan leaned forward and gripped my shirt with both hands—“where you either kiss me or cough awkwardly, make an excuse, scratch your balls, and cower back in your bedroom.”
“Wow, so many choices,” I mused, meeting her halfway. “Eenie, meenie, minie—” Our mouths met in a frenzy. She tasted like wine and pizza.
Holy shit, it was hotter than it should have been.
My hands moved to her hips as I tried to pull her onto my lap. But her skirt was too tight.
“Damn it.” I tugged harder and heard a split.
Jordan reared back. “Did you just rip my skirt?”
“Small tear.”
“Rip.”
“No.” I gripped the fabric until it gave with a scratchy tearing sound. “That’s a rip.” With a grin I tossed the discarded remains onto the ground.
Jordan stared at the skirt for a few seconds before wrapping her legs around my torso and fusing her mouth with mine. “You owe me a skirt.”
“Can I rip you out of that one too?”
She laughed against my mouth. I stood, lifting her with me, and walked her backward toward my bedroom.
We looked good. She was half-naked, sexy, I was carrying her around like a badass, and then things went . . . south.
And not a good south.
“Watch out for my shoes—”
I tripped over two spiked heels, sending Jordan flying into the wall. She slid down said wall and landed on the plant—yes, the plant, the one she’d kept alive for all those years.
“My plant!” she yelled. I burst out laughing as remnants of dirt and plant sifted through her hands. “You killed it!”
“Whoa!” I held up my hands and backed up, tripping over the damn shoes again and stumbling to the floor.
I shit you not, Jordan giddyup crawled toward me, faster than lightning, straddled me, and started fighting.
“We’ll get you a new plant!” I yelled as she smacked my chest. I gripped her wrists and flipped her onto her back. “Don’t you think—”
She bucked beneath me.
“—it was probably time to let the plant go? You know, cut the apron strings!”
“It’s not my child!” she wheezed, tuckering herself out.
“Exactly.” I nodded, then released her hand and patted her cheek.
Her eyes went wild.

REVIEW:  4.25 OF 5 STARS

I always feel like I start out my reviews for Rachel Van Dyken's the same.  Something along the lines of "How does she always write a good book???" But she totally does!  Reid and Jordan's story is no different. If you loved the first two books in The Consequence series, you will love this one too.

You probably remember Reid from the first books.  He is Max's brother that was accosted by Milo's grandmother.  He is a master at getting women, but is off his game.  He also has just landed the movie role of a lifetime and if he doesn't get things in his life in order, it might just be his last.

Enter Jordan Litwright, publicist extrodinaire.  I LOVE this character.  Possibly because she is a klutz, speaks her mind all the time, and refuses to take BS off of Reid.  She is such a fun character to read and I can relate to her. Anyone else fall down steps on the way to work besides me?  Well, Jordan would so she is my new book BFF.  :)  Reid and Jordan might be polar opposites, however, they are hot and attract like magnets!

Max is an added bonus for fun and humor.  His mind is similar to Grandma Nadine and if those two are ever in a room together you better watch out.  LOL!   So, if you love some crazy antics, fun, humor and just good HEA, then pick this one up and enjoy!

Review: He Will Be My Ruin by K.A. Tucker

He Will Be My Ruin by K.A. Tucker

Synopsis:

The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series makes her suspense debut with this sexy, heartpounding story of a young woman determined to find justice after her best friend’s death, a story pulsing with the “intense, hot, emotional” (Colleen Hoover) writing that exhilarates her legions of fans.

A woman who almost had it all . . .

On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation . . .

Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

Review
4.5 out of 5 stars

It's becoming increasingly clear that I am turning into a big fan of suspense novels.  I think one of the things I love most is how the authors of these books keep you on your toes, constantly guessing and second guessing every single character until all is revealed.  While He Will be My Ruin may be K.A. Tucker's first standalone suspense novel it's written as though this genre is her expertise.

Maggie, our main character, the daughter and heir to Sparkes Energy, grew up with more money than one person can even begin to imagine what to do with.  Yet, her parents left her to be raised by a live in nanny whose daughter, Celine, became her very best friend.  These two are as close as siblings.  Sudden news of Celine's suicide brings Maggie back from one of her non-profits ventures.  After paying her respects it's up to her to close out Celine's estate.  But once in Celine's old apartment Maggie just cannot shake the feeling that something's off.  To begin with Celine isn't the kind of person who would just end her life and even more curious are the things Maggie begins to uncover as she boxes up the apartment.

Throw in a nosey neighbor, a good looking building super who has not only been helpful but who also happens to be a good listener, and a hot governor's son running a successful business with some sort of mystery tie to Celine and you've got yourself an extraordinary suspense novel!  I of course had my own theory as to what really happened the night Celine passed and just as soon as I was sure I was correct, bam! K.A. Tucker threw a wrench into the story and things went a direction I didn't even consider.

He Will be My Ruin is a good solid mystery with an unpredictable plot and interesting characters.  What I also truly enjoyed about this book was just how believable the story felt.  I didn't feel like anything was far fetched or unrealistic.  I really liked Maggie, she is strong, determined, ambitious and with a heart of gold.  She is confident, she follows her instincts, and doesn't even consider giving up until every lead or possible scenario has been considered and ruled out.  This book held my attention from the prologue until the story came full circle.  If you love a story which will keep you guessing until the very last page then this is the book for you!

EXCERPT:  I’m wearing a huge smile as I get dropped off at my building and walk through the door, talking to Ariela on the phone. Having her come back into my life after so many years has been both excruciating and exhilarating. But this weekend changed things. We faced our past together and, in one week, we’re going to decide if we want to pursue a future together. As much as I want to be with her, honestly, I’m a little torn about it. Part of me wants nothing more than to pretend we never broke up. But the reality is that she’s married. And even though she filed for a divorce, I wonder if it’s too much too soon. In a very short time—on a whim—she came to California, was reunited with me, slept with me, filed for a divorce, got a new job, and went back to Eastbrooke. I mean, how many more life changes can she throw at herself all at once? I loved her with everything I was in high school, and I was devastated when she left with nothing more than a goodbye. And since she’s come back, she’s wreaked more havoc in my life. Soon, I’ll have to decide if I want to risk another relationship with her. Even though she still looks like the girl I loved, she’s different—life, age, and time have that effect. “Riley!” A shrill voice stops me in my tracks, wiping the smile off my face. “Shelby, what are you doing here?” I ask, as she gets up from the couch in the lobby. “I told you I didn’t want to see you again.” “I need to talk to you, Riley. It’s important. Can I please come up?” I know girls like her. No way I’m letting her come up. Ever. “Shelby, as in naked, leather-strap, threesome Shelby?” Ariela asks in my ear. “Uh, hang on,” I say to her, putting the phone against my chest. Then I say discreetly, “Shelby, whatever you need to say, you can say here.” “God, you’re such an ass,” she hisses loudly. “I thought you might want to do this in private.” “I don’t want to do anything with you, in public or in private.” “Well, you’re going to have to now, Riley. Because I’m pregnant,” she says, uttering the words no man wants to hear from a three-night screw. “You’re what?” “Do you really want to do this here?” she asks, glancing toward my doorman. “Fine. Come up.” I drag her into the elevator. Once it closes, I say, “I don't know who you’ve been fucking, but if you’re pregnant, there’s no way that it’s mine.” “Yes, it is, Riley. I haven’t been with anyone since we broke up.” “We didn’t break up. You went to a few events with me. We fucked. And I used a condom every single time.” She shrugs. “I don’t know what to tell you. They aren’t one hundred percent effective. I’m sorry, Riley. I certainly didn’t plan on getting pregnant.” “Aren’t you on the pill?” “No, it made me fat.” I shake my head. I can’t fucking believe this. But I’m not stupid either. I go into my guest bathroom, grab a pregnancy test out of the cabinet, and then hand it to her. “Take this.” “Why do you have that?” “Honey, you’re not the first girl to tell me she’s pregnant.” I open it up and hand it to her. “Go pee on it, bring it out, and we’ll watch. See what happens.” She hesitates, just as they all do. “Um, I don’t know if it will work yet. I’m barely pregnant.” “So you didn’t do a test?” “Yes, I did a test, Riley. God, you’re being such an ass.” She’s right. I am. “I’m sorry. Please, for me, go take the test.” “I will, I’m just saying that they aren’t all as accurate as the one I took.” She lets out a dramatic sigh and goes into the bathroom, not bothering to shut the door. When she sees me watching her pee, she gives me a sexy smile. I turn around. Fuck. Of course, that’s what got me into this mess. Please, please, don’t let her be pregnant. I hear the toilet flush and turn around. “Here’s the stick, Riley. I’m going to sit down. Pregnancy is exhausting.” She flops down on my couch while I stare at the stick, willing the line not to change. But it does.

Review:  4.5 out of 5 stars

Another great installment to one of my favorite addicting series and guilty pleasures.  If you're a fan of the Keatyn Chronicles then you absolutely have to download and read book 10!  I devoured it in one sitting and found myself sad when it was over because I wasn't ready for the book to end!  I love these characters and I truly believe what I enjoy so much about the most recent books is getting to spend a little one on one time with multiple people, following several different story lines and seeing how much has changed since their time at Eastbrook as well as how some things never change.  I mean seriously, this needs to be brought to life in the form of a TV series!  It's the perfect dose of drama, love, humor, friendship, sex, money, power...the list could go on and on.  Did I mention guilty pleasure?

This time around we dig a little deeper into the Ariela, Riley and Shelby saga.  Is she pregnant?  Is it Riley's?  Does this mean the end of Rliey and Ariela?  It's crazy how one fictional character can make me love him one minute and the next want to strangle him, I mean he is just a book character but when I'm reading these books it's like I know him personally.  While Keatyn learned who she was and what she wanted out of life at an early age it seems as though Riley has so much more to learn!!!  It's frustrating, but at the same time it's also what makes this continuation of the series so interesting.  He may have power and money but it's clear to us readers that those things don't make a person happy.  Here's to hoping Riley finds himself and figures out what he wants out of his life and grabs a hold of his on HEA.  In the meantime though I'm just going to continue to enjoy his drama filled journey, because let's be honest it makes for some awesome reading material.

Money is not all Riley drama it's also filled with a very magical wedding, the one many of us readers have been waiting what seems like forever for, and Jillian does not disappoint.  As far as fictional weddings go this one is absolutely perfect and with no details spared it's almost as if we are guests ourselves.

And in typical Jillian fashion she teases us with glimpses of potential upcoming storylines, and I love trying to guess who will find love next or who is on the verge of a very bad life changing decision.  It takes an enormous amount of talent in my opinion for an author to take core characters and transition them through so many "years" while still maintaining an entertaining, addicting plot and Jillian Dodd has done this perfectly.  It sort of like an epilogue but so much more!

All these relationships will prove invaluable when Erik faces his greatest challenge as a son, a husband and a father. Once he walked away from everything he loved. But now he is here to stay.

Review
4.25 out of 5 stars

Here to Stay is without a doubt the farewell Daisy and Eric deserved, the one I longed for at the end of The Man I Love.  While I loved the first book, I craved more time with both of those two characters.  I yearned to see more of their road, what would happen after 12 years, that’s a long time for soul mates to be apart. Would things pick back up easily, would it be like they were never apart?  In Here To Stay I got all my answers.  It was a very satisfying conclusion when the last page was turned my reward was peace and happiness for a much-deserved HEA.

Suanne Laqueur goes above and beyond in exploring what happens after Eric shows up in Canada.  He and Daisy are finally reunited, past sins are forgiven but it doesn’t mean the demons are forgotten.  As readers we get to see these two fight through their demons, to choose to stay, to choose to fight for one another, for love.  Being apart isn’t an option, but moving towards a future together is something that doesn’t happen overnight.  It takes months and years for their every day life to find the same page, but when it does and the days getting there are absolutely beautiful.

There are two very particular roads Suanne Laqueur chooses to explore that I have to confess I found written perfectly.  I adored and I think it was absolutely necessary to explore Will and Eric’s relationship, their friendship, how Eric’s disappearance shaped these two, the details of how their friendship survived were important and I am glad she chose to explore those details.  I found it a beautiful display of love between two people and how that love transcends any and all bad circumstances.  Not only are those two there for one another in the happy times but they are each other’s pillars of strength in the most trying of times and it’s those moments of this book that I truly loved reading most.

As for my second favorite journey of this book, I don’t want to go into too many details so as not to spoil it for you, but I will say it’s was watching Eric and Daisy leaning on another during one of the most trying times of their marriage.  Watching them fight for happiness, for their marriage, for one another.  The support each gave, the strength of their love was simply astounding.  It’s what I would hope my own marriage would look like if I ever found myself in a similar situation.  I cried, I smiled it was everything this book and their journey needed even though it was simply heartbreaking.

If I’m being truly honest one of the things I liked least about this book was Eric’s journey into his family’s history.  There were many times I felt bogged down into the details of the family tree, of who was who and what happened.  The family tree diagrams were helpful, but to be perfectly truthful I didn’t really care about those details.  I do appreciate his journey into his past, I think it was essential in order for Eric to accept how his childhood shaped many of the life changing decision in his past as well as the present and the journey into his family history was without a doubt essential in order to move forward as a husband and as a man, I just didn’t find the tiny details important enough to read about in such great lengths.

This is without a doubt a must read follow-up story to The Man I Love.  You will laugh and you will cry and when it’s over you will be so grateful Suanne Laqueur chose to give Daisy and Eric the conclusion they so deserved.  I understand now why it couldn’t have come in an epilogue or even a novella, there were just too many roads, which needed exploring before Daisy and Eric could ride off into the sunset, and I for one and so thankful for the opportunity to see how it all played out.

Secrets are stubborn things when they refuse to remain hidden. They tear through your soul, clawing and lashing until the pain becomes so unbearable, you’re left no choice but to silently scream your agony. No one hears you, of course. You smile on the outside and drift through life as though your mind is at peace, but all the while, you remain your own tortured prisoner. Sealed inside the darkened, soundproof room of your conscience, deafening cries echo as you plead for someone to unlock the door and release you from your nightmares. And eventually, when no one comes, you find ways to cope. To dull the suffering the only way you know how.
But what happens when you’ve become so numb, when everything around you has become so blurred, that you begin to lose focus on the saving grace standing directly in front of you? When you’ve anesthetized yourself to the point of losing consciousness, forced to watch as his once solid image fades away, lost to your reach in the haze as it smothers you?
