Review: Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Synopsis
St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

Review
5 out of 5 stars

I have read my fair share of paranormal books, definitely those of the vampire nature!  I cannot help but say "yes" to buying it if it's about vampires.  Which is hilarious because when I first picked up Twilight (before there was a movie) I was almost embarrassed to tell anyone I was reading about vampires, but it was so good I finally had to tell my best friend and now blog partner.  Anyways, obviously I adore Twilight and will fight over Edward Cullen!  So let's be honest it's pretty hard for me to find a vampire book I love as much as Twilight.  So imagine my surprise when I picked up Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy and was completely sucked in...I'm talking read all 6 books in 6 days.  I literally finished one, immediately one-clicked the next and dove right in.  I couldn't concentrate at work and I was up until 2, 3 and 4 am because I couldn't find a place to stop.  I was too addicted, I literally didn't want to put it down!

So what's the low down on Vampire Academy?  Rose and Lissa (best friends) are on the run from St. Vladimirs Academy, a private school for vampires, especially elite royalty such as Lissa.  She just so happens to be the last in a line of royalty and her Dragomir last name is revered.  Rose, is half vampire otherwise known as a Dhampir.  A Dhampir's sole purpose in life is to protect their vampires.  Rose and Lissa are not only best friends, but also share a very rare bond which allows Rose to see Lissa when they aren't together as well as experience her emotions as they are happening.  This bond is practically unheard of.  It also makes Rose the perfect Dhampir to protect Lissa.

All good stories must have a villain and in this series those villains are better knows as Strigoi.  They are the most ruthless of vampires because they feed off other Vampires, completely draining them of blood thus forcing them to turn Strigoi.  In addition they are very difficult to kill and prey predominately on hunting down the Moroi, simply known as vampire royalty.

Eventually Rose and Lissa are forced to return to St. Vladimirs Academy where typical teenage drama ensues.  But dang if I don't love it!  Those of you who enjoy the Vampire Diaries TV show I think you're going to fall in love with this series as well.  I simply cannot get enough of the over emotional, over reacting teenagers.  They are so much fun to read about and I get just as involved in their world and chooses and I do my own life!

So we've got best friends, we've got enemies, what about romance?  Meet Dimitri, another Dhampir, one who has graduated and is now a protector/guardian.  He's the one responsible for hunting down the best friends and personally returning them to the academy.  He's hot, he's guarded and he's dangerous and I adore him.  Without a doubt I could read about him all day!  As far as book vampires go, he is right there at the top of the list.  He has a broody, moody vibe and is good at keeping secrets.

In a nutshell, if you enjoy paranormal, vampire books and young adult drama enthralls you, get to one-clicking this book.  I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.  Just make sure when you sit down to start on book one that you have time to also read books 2-6 because they will CONSUME you!  From start to finish I haven't come across a better vampire series.  Vampire Academy is crazy good!
