Schizoaffective disorder: a mental illness in which a person experiences a combination of mood disorder and schizophrenia symptoms.

I know about this illness—very well—because I suffer from it. It’s been four years since my diagnosis, and ever since, I’ve been living in a dark hole. Voices constantly invading my thoughts. Hallucinations. All of which force me to question if what I’m experiencing is even reality.
But here I am, still hanging on, still breathing and living through it.
That is, until he stumbled into my life. Logan Reed. I don’t want any part of him. I’ve pushed him away, but he isn’t easily deterred. I’ve told him I’m different, but he doesn’t care. He’s trying to slowly break me down. I’m trying just as hard not to let him. He doesn’t know how truly damaged I am; what will happen when he does?
I know the truth—he’ll never be able to look at me the same way again. Just like everybody else.

Review: A Lush Betrayal, by Selena Laurence

Synopsis
Joss Jamison has it all. He's the lead singer for the world's hottest rock band, Lush. He's wealthy, sexy, talented...and miserable. Twelve months ago, Joss lost his finely honed control and made a mistake he can't undo. A mistake that could end up costing him his best friend, his band, and maybe his heart.

Mel DiLorenzo has it all. She's been hired to document the world tour of her sister's fiance's rock band. She's gorgeous, talented, loved...and sick of being the little sister. When she agrees to the summer job, Mel has no idea she's walking into a minefield of friendships lost and hearts destroyed. She also has no idea what it means to be the object of Joss Jamison's affections.

One hot rock star plus one life-altering mistake, add a dash of sexy younger sister and a handful of broken hearts, and you've got a recipe for fire. Life on the road can be hot, but for the boys of Lush, it's about to get a whole hell of a lot hotter.

Review
4 out of 5 stars

I received a gift copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Joss Jamison is the lead singer of the hottest rock band in the US, Lush.  He should be flying high and loving life, but he is miserable.  Nothing seems to make him happy and the two relationships he had in this life are now gone.  His best friend, Walsh is a recovering alcoholic and Walsh's girlfriend, Tammy DiLorenzo has it out for him since they made one mistake by sleeping together when Walsh was in rehab.  I enjoyed Joss's character immensely.  He makes you swoon with his song writing and although he can be a jerk at times, its usually justified.  I felt really bad for him too though.  You could tell how miserable he was in the rock star status and that his guilt over his one night with Tammy is eating him alive.  In the beginning, he is convinced that he is actually in love with Tammy, but luckily Tammy's little sister, Mel shows up to show him what real love truly is.

Mel DeLorenzo, Little D to the band mates, is a photographer that has been hired to do a photo book documentary on Lush.  She is hiding her own little secret about her degree, but it pales in comparison to the bombshell Joss and Tammy are hiding.  Mel is a fun loving character who is easily bossed around in the beginning, but gains strength to think on her own.  I love her character because she sees so much more as photographer and figures out Joss's loneliness quickly.  They are a great couple and I am glad that we got to have such a great story.

It was nice for me too that the focus was not on the sex, but the story unfolding.  Sometimes when it so much physical contact, I think you lose the point of the story.  Well done, Ms. Laurence!  I am anxious to dig into For The Love of A Lush, Tammy and Walsh's story next!  I hope that she can make me like them as much as Joss and Mel.

Excerpt:
In an instant, he’s crouched down in front of me, hands spreading me open wider before dipping his tongue inside me. I continue massaging myself as he laps me up like I’m the only one who can quench his thirst. He sickens me, and as soon as I feel the swirl of hate manifest, I turn every part of me off and simply go through the movements I know he likes. I’m a well-oiled machine at this point, flawless in my performance. He has no idea that I’m the poison in his bones, making my home in his soul. I’ve crept under his skin, and he never suspected a thing other than everything I’ve wanted him to, but he’s made my life a hell, and payback is a wicked bitch that comes in the form of me. I’m the devil seeped within the cracks of him. What he doesn’t know is that it’s because of him that I am what I am, and he’s fallen into the cobwebs of my lies like a fool. I guess I should love him for that, because when he least suspects it, he’s going to give me everything I’ve been seeking— vengeance.

Excerpt
Hailey forced herself to stand still for his leisurely perusal. Even when he stood and stalked toward her, she managed to hold on to her dignity—whatever dregs she had left after donning these clothes and almost falling on her face. But his smile hit her like a blast of heat, blinding her, scalding her. He looked far too pleased with himself, like a man about to get everything he wanted. And her shaky insides warned she might just give it to him.
“What do you mean?” she asked, proud her voice didnt quaver too much.
“You want to stay here while were in Chicago,” he said. “To stay here for three days, to blend in so that no one questions why youre here. To ask questions, poke around.”
Yes, that was exactly what she wanted. So why did her nod feel like surrender? As if shed agreed to his terms before she even knew them. But then maybe she did know what his terms would be. His eyes spoke the words his lips had yet to say. There were volumes of gold-flecked pages filled with all that sensual knowledge. They promised delight and, even better, a hard bite to the exchange. Where the men she had been with were a fresh spring breeze, he stood before her like the calm before the storm, his eyes darkening clouds.
“Can you…” She licked her lips. His gaze tracked the movement, making her feel hunted. “Can you help me?”
His expression softened. Just the slightest degree, but it was enough to slow the hammering of her heart. This was the same kind man shed met in the lobby. Desire had given him a rough edge, turning his loping gait into a prowl, making his nostrils flare—scenting her. But he was still kind inside.
When he didnt answer, she searched for whatever strength she might have found. You want… hed said, listing her terms. Only his terms were left to be stated. A negotiation, then. But even as she thought the words, an image flashed through her mind, a gazelle caught from behind, the vicious beauty of her captor feasting in a National Geographic special.
“What do you want?” she whispered, and somehow the wall was at her back. He was at her front…crowding her…embracing her?
“You,” he snarled. “Under me. Over me. On your knees in front of me. I get full artistic license to your body for three days.”
His words pounded her like hail, leaving dents and then pooling in the hollows left behind. They drowned out the rest of the world and shook the floor. She began to shake too—but her gaze remained locked with his. The shaking was on the inside, fear and a strange longing warring inside her, a battle to the death. She stood frozen, caught in his sights and too terrified to run. Too curious to walk away.
He stepped back, sending a wash of crisp hotel air over her body. She sucked in a breath and immediately missed the earthy scent of him.
“And you,” he continued conversationally, “will have total access to play Nancy Drew in the hotel. That is, whenever Im not using you.”
Her body lit up when he said the word using. It imploded on you, spoken with such self-assured possession. What was wrong with her that she wanted to be used? Maybe because she wanted to be free to enjoy sex, to really explore it, for the first time in her tame little life. Maybe because he would be the one using her, and he seemed like he would know just what to do with her.
This was a bad idea. For reasons that werent quite coming to her at the moment. But she knew it was bad. If shed said it once, shed said it a thousand times to her preschoolers: dont make decisions when youre angry. Though she wasnt angry. She was concerned. And frustrated. And…
God, Chloe, why? After I worked so freaking hard so you could start college, why couldnt you be more careful?
Okay, she might be angry.
She swallowed. So maybe this weekend could be for her too. She would find the babys father, but shed also find something for herself.
With a deep breath, she struggled for levity. A lopsided tilt of her lips was all she could manage. “Where do I sign?” she joked.
His grin widened, revealing an even row of white teeth. The Cheshire cat had just such a smile. “Im so glad you asked. I have blank copies of my contract in the side table. Right next to the lube.”

Belles On Wheels Book Signing - Atlanta Stop

Last Friday, May 9th, we had the honor of being included on the Belles on Wheel bus tour for authors of Gallery Publishing.  9 authors were on tour, Emma Chase, Alice Clayton, Kresley Cole, Kyra Davis, Lisa Renee Jones, Christina Lauren, Jennifer Probst, S.C. Stephens, Kristen Proby, it was amazing!  Getting to Atlanta on a Friday evening in traffic and pouring rain wasn’t so much fun, but the outcome was so worth it! We work with Kristin and Juliana at Gallery Books a lot and finally got to meet them in person.  It was so much fun!  We love working with them and can’t wait to do more tours in the future!

While we were there we walked around and spoke to some of the fans waiting in line for autographs we wanted to know where they were from and which author  they were most excited to see.  Here are some of their photos and answers.

Whitney from Murphy, NC loves Kresley Cole.  She said her Mama taught her good taste in books!

Jessica Geist and Laurel Fleming from Cartersville, GA also love Kresley Cole.  They say her characters are amazing and Jessica has been inspired so much by her writing that she is working towards being an author as well.

Valerie Cooper from Charlotte, NC love SC Stephens (and Kellan Kyle, obviously!)  She fell in love with Thoughtless, even though it goes totally against her values and principals "you are totally sucked in and love it."

We also met a book club from called SheReader (like them on FB and tell them we sent you!).  They love all the authors just like us.

On to the interviews!  Unfortunately we didn’t have a ton of time to spend with the authors as a result of the rain, traffic issues and another author interview we had arranged across town with Abbi Glines, so we had to rush a little more than we would have liked.  But we found out some great things about the authors.  We hope you enjoy their answers and getting to know a little more about them as much as we did!

SC Stephens

Q:  Are we really going to have to wait until 2015 for Thoughtful and more Kellan Kyle?
A:  “I’m am hoping not, the goal is this year, but I am not really in control of it. It is written, but has to go through editing etc.”

Q:  Are you finding it more difficult or easier to write from Kellan's POV?
A: “It wasn’t more difficult to write from his point of view, but making sure everything matched was hard.  I had to go through Thoughtless page by page and match up plot lines, conversations etc.  It took a while.”

Q:  Do you think we will ever get an Anna/Griffin novella or book??
A:  Hestitating….”yeah”.  Woohooo!!! They are so much fun

Q:  What was the last book you read or are reading?
A:  Game of Thrones

Christina Lauren
 Christina-one half of Christina Lauren

Q:  How in the world did you both meet? 2 different women in different states writing NYT best sellers! Whose idea was it to write a novel?
A:  (Lauren)“We met online writing fan fiction, I had a panel at Comicon to discuss fan fiction and Christina was on my panel.  We collaborated on the story and it took off!”  “We initially signed for YA and then Christina had an idea and we reworked it in to Beautiful Bastard.”

Q:  How do you write logistically? Separately and then merge?
A:  (Christina) “We always outline together, usually I go to CA because who wants to come to Utah.  A lot of times we outline standing in line at Disney to ride Tower of Terror. We write in google doc and split it up my chapter or POV.  And once we get to a certain point we combine.” (Lauren)  “I don’t think they have figured out that we just get to eff around with our BFF all day!”

Q:  What was the last book you read or are reading?
A:  Me Before You by Jo Jo Wells-Lauren
Don’t Look Back by Jennifer Almentrout-Christina

Synopsis
Six months ago, Walsh Clark was the drummer of America’s hottest rock sensation, Lush. Now he’s living at the Double A Ranch in north Texas, home to cows, cowboys, and lushes—like him. He’s survived alcoholism, rehab, and the breakup of his band. But the one thing Walsh might not survive is the return of his ex fiancée Tammy DiLorenzo.

Tammy and Walsh met at fourteen, and she was with him on every step to fame and fortune—until one fateful night when she betrayed him. Now she’s back, begging for forgiveness and ready to fight for her man. But some betrayals are too painful to forget, some mistakes can’t be repaired, and Walsh is certain that he and Tammy can’t ever be together again.

But DiLorenzo women don’t back down, and Tammy always gets what she wants. In the wake of the lies and losses, she’s prepared to do whatever it takes for a second chance. She’ll give it all—for the love of a lush.

Excerpt
As I get closer I see that he’s wearing a Nine Inch Nails t-shirt and a pair of jeans that really should have a belt, his boxers showing out the top of the waistband. I feel my breathing get faster, and I tell myself that it’s just adrenaline because I don’t want to have to talk to him, but it might also be because he’s taller then me. Like by a lot. He’s also got broad shoulders and really nice thick light brown hair. It makes me want to dig my fingers into it.

I walk toward my desk. He’s leaning with one hand on the back of my chair, talking to a dark-haired guy who’s sitting in the next row.

“Dude, I’m telling you, Joss can get us tickets, we just need your mom to drive and we’re set.”

“Excuse me?” I say, trying really hard not to sound like I give a shit if he notices me or not. “I think I’m supposed to sit here.”

He turns, and I find myself staring into the softest, sweetest brown eyes I’ve ever seen. Looking into them is like being cocooned in something warm and plush. I suddenly feel safe, and peaceful and happy, things that I don’t very often feel. He must see something interesting in me too, because we both just stand, looking at one another for what feels like hours. His soft lips turn up on the ends and his smile is as gentle as his big brown eyes. He’s not looking at my chest, he’s not looking up at me, he’s looking at me. The real me, like I matter, and I think maybe I could have him look at me that way forever. Then I hear the other boy’s voice, “Dude, she needs to sit down, move your ass.”

“I’m Walsh,” he says, cutting to the heart of it all.

“Tammy,” I reply.

He steps back as the teacher walks in and asks everyone to sit down. Walsh is assigned to the seat behind me, and for the entire class I can physically feel him behind me, like a tantalizing brush of fingertips across my back. A buzzing, warm sensation that makes it nearly impossible to concentrate on quadratic equations, which, let’s get serious, I’m never going to need to know anyway.

By the end of class I’ve decided—I have to have him. There is no doubt, no indecision or need to consider it. Walsh Clark—I learn his full name when roll is called—is the one. The problem being, I don’t know exactly how to make him mine. Since I’ve hated boys for the last three years I haven’t had much practice at getting them to like me. But, I’ve always been a “woman of action” as my dad calls it, so I figure I’ll approach it like I do anything else—make a plan, and follow it through until I get what I want.

I’m contemplating all of this as the bell rings and the teacher dismisses us. I pack up my stuff, disappointed when Walsh and his friend hightail it out of class before I can catch up. But when I reach the door to the hall, there he stands, leaning up against some lockers, a smile on his face as I walk toward him.

“Where’s you next class?” he asks, moving his books to the hand furthest from me.

“Art. Annex B. You going to walk me?”

“Yeah,” he answers as he reaches over and gently lifts my backpack from my hand.

About Author Mari Brown
I have been writing as far back as i can remember. I spent most of my teen years writing short stories that my friends were always begging for more for me it was nothing more than a hobby and a way to entertain myself even though I did manage to get published in the school paper a couple times. I met and married my very own Alpha male 19 years ago and we have a 18 year old daughter, and two sons ages 15 and 14. We have 3 dogs and 2 cats. There is never a dull moment around my house. We live on the beautiful Gulf Coast of Alabama. We are blessed to have a home on the river and to have the beach just 20 minutes away. Over the years I wrote a few short stories in between raising my babies but it wasn’t until 2012 I decided I needed to pursue my dream of writing a full novel. It took awhile but in January of 2014 my debut novel was self published. There is always a story in my head and characters talking to me. I enjoy being able to share my characters with others.  Facebook   Goodreads   Website  Twitter: @MariBrownAuthor   Amazon

Excerpt
“Ten bucks says the only person not packing is Mils grandma by marriage.” Mo said once we’d all finished eating our dinner, which has basically been a painful process of chewing, swallowing, drinking unhealthy amounts of wine and trying to stare at my plate to keep from looking at Trace, while my wife sat next to me. Hell had officially risen to earth and I was smack dab in the middle of it trying my damndest to remember how to swallow without choking — without dying a little bit inside each time I saw him touch her face. And trying not to feel like an ass when Mil caught me staring — again. I’d resolved about an hour ago to actually be the man she needed me to be and I was already failing. Horribly. The second time I looked,Mo kicked me under the table but accidentally hit Tex instead causing everyone to look up, which was probably why Mo said what she did.
We all turned heads to look at the hundred year old woman. She was currently on her fourth glass of wine and looked to be about two seconds away from falling into her chicken cacciatore.
“Nope.” Nixon shook his head. “It’s always the ones you don’t expect. My money’s on Grandma.”
“I’ll take that bet.” Tex rose. “Seems like someone needs to fall on their own knife and all that. This has to be the most depressing wedding I’ve ever gone to and that includes the fake one Mo made for her kittens when she was four.”
“They lived happily ever after.” Mo tilted her head into the air and narrowed her eyes.
Tex leaned down and tapped Mo on the nose. “Yes if happily means they lived for five damn minutes before marching directly into oncoming traffic.”
“I think the wedding just hit its low point.” Mil muttered. “Save us, Tex. I beg you. Find the gun and I’ll give you a prize.”
“Prize?” Tex’s eyes lit up. “As in—”
“As in her new husband won’t punch you in the face. You’re welcome. Yay, prizes.” I did a fake punch into the air. “Now go create some excitement before Nixon starts picking people off with his semi-automatic.”
Nixon rolled his eyes. “Right, like I’d even bring—”
“It’s in the SUV.” Trace answered sounding bored. “Saw it when I took out my dress.”
“Damn.” He looked away.
Just then a very drunk looking cousin Vinnie got up and took the microphone from the band. “Look here! I have a toast to the bride and groom!” The feedback from the microphone mixed with his inability to stand up straight caused him to drop the stand and then fall flat on his ass.
“For the love of God save us all.” I pushed Tex towards Grandma.
We all sat at the table, the very depressing bridal party table, and watched as Tex slowly made his way towards the elderly woman.
“This won’t end well.” Trace said under her breath. “The man has the subtleness of a bomb.”
“Exactly.” Mo grinned from ear to ear.“I did say we needed entertainment, didn’t I?”
“Mo… ” Nixon warned.
“He cheated on me Nixon. Let me have my fun.” She said smoothly.
“He what?” Nixon roared jumping to his feet, curious stares pinned in our direction as Mo grabbed his hand and pulled him back to his seat.
“I’ve got this. You aren’t the only one who knows how to use their powers for evil, brother. Revenge is a bitch, isn’t that what they say, Trace?”
She looked guiltily down at her hands.Yeah, double meanings I could really get without. Hopefully Mo wasn’t going to get Tex shot at our wedding, not that I’d be against it. This was the first I heard of him cheating, granted, Mo hadn’t really been all that for sharing recently. She was as secretive as ever. Something told me it was for a reason, but I’d been too wrapped up in my own drama to even ask. How bad did I suck as a half brother? Bad, real bad. On a scale of one to ten in the suckiness department I’d be around an eleven.
Tex finally reached her chair and sat down next to her, his smile was wide, I couldn’t tell what he was saying but his hands were all over the place, and then he set one hand on Grandma.
“Oh this isn’t going to end well.” Mo chuckled. “She hates being touched.”
“It is Tex.” I pointed out. “She could do a lot worse.”
“Doubtful.” Mo snorted crossing her arms.
Holy shit what the hell? Had I been living under a rock for the past few months? What went down? And how didn’t I know about it.
I winced when Tex moved his other hand next to Grandma’s leg. Probably wouldn’t be a good time to tell him that she’d seen her fair share of murder. I almost closed my eyes when she looked down at his hand.
“Aw shit.” Nixon shook his head. “You had to challenge him, Mo.”
Mo’s face twisted into a murderous smile as she pointed and exclaimed. “Game. Set. Match.”
Grandma had Tex by the balls.

“Ouch!” This from Mil.

Review
4.5 out of 5 stars

RVD's writing style is always so perfect.  I never get tired of reading her books nor do I ever get really frustrated with where she takes her stories.  They flow well and she can hook me in a book usually in the first sentence and I'm happy to report Entice is no different.  The story picks up right where Elect left us, Chase has accepted Mil's proposal and is getting ready to walk down the aisle.  Obviously this rush into marriage seems crazy since he his still head over heels in love with Trace, but he figures he can suffer through anything for a year and is willing to do whatever he can to help protect Mil, especially considering their history.

This time around we get to alternate between multiple POV’s, which to be honest I found myself really enjoying.  I felt it took the story to a whole new level, allowing us to dive even deeper into the mafia world.  In Entice we get the POV of Chase, Mil, Nixon and Tex (who is hysterically funny!).  Their individual perspectives and knowledge of the past were intriguing and allowed me to feel more connected to the group as a whole.  While Nixon is still my favorite and I loved getting to see plenty of him and Trace is this book, I have to admit , Chase gave him a run for his money in Entice.  And, after reading the epilogue I am pretty sure in the next book, Tex might give the both of them a run, who doesn't love a bad boy with a sense of humor!

So many fans of this series are team Chase and many of you probably wanted him to end up with Trace (although we didn’t!), but let me tell you, once you read Entice you will know without a doubt Trace and Chase were never meant to be.  It was always going to be Mil.  Mil truly brings out the best in Chase, they challenge one another and there's no denying their shared chemistry.  Chase didn't really understand love or what being in love really felt like until he finally opened himself up to the possibility of someone other than Trace.  I couldn't have been more sold on his feelings for Mil than when he discovers and admits that true love is not at all about him and what he wants.  I love that he is a fierce protector and that he is a take charge leader as well, but also knows when to take a back seat to others.  Entice really opened up a new side of Chase and I am without a doubt a bigger fan of him than I previously was.  I'm excited to see what we hear from him in the next book.

Now on to his leading lady.  Mil is one strong character, she has gone through so much in her short life that it seems unfair she is thrown to the top of the De Lange mafia family.  But if anyone can take charge and make things happen it is her.  You won’t be disappointed in her character at all.  Through her POV I got a feel for not only her insecurities, but where they stemmed from.  I love how she always summoned just enough courage to get through every curve ball, how she tries to protect her heart from falling for an emotionally unavailable Chase, and loving watching the chips fall into place when all her walls finally crumble.  Getting to really know Mil was a treat.

I am a huge fan of the Eagle Elite series!  If you haven't already been sucked into this series, you're really missing out!  You're going to love all the guys, and who doesn't love an awesome mafia story?  Each installment gets better and better.  One-click all the books in this series today!

COMING SOON!

Synopsis
Whether you were charmed by Celeste in Flat-Out Love or are meeting her for the first time, this book is a joyous celebration of differences, about battling private wars that rage in our heads and in our hearts, and—very much so— this is a story about first love..

For high-school senior Celeste Watkins, every day is a brutal test of bravery. And Celeste is scared. Alienated because she’s too smart, her speech too affected, her social skills too far outside the norm, she seems to have no choice but to retreat into isolation.

But college could set her free, right? If she can make it through this grueling senior year, then maybe. If she can just find that one person to throw her a lifeline, then maybe, just maybe.
Justin Milano, a college sophomore with his own set of quirks, could be that person to pull her from a world of solitude. To rescue her—that is, if she’ll let him.

Together, they may work. Together, they may save each other. And together they may also save another couple—two people Celeste knows are absolutely, positively flat-out in love.

Excerpt
There was a knock at the door and Matt leaned in, swinging a brown paper bag in her direction. “I heard Mom made stuffed peppers tonight. Last time she made those, I nearly died from flatulence. I assume she stuffed them with her usual repulsive ground chicken, quinoa, Brussels sprouts, and pomegranate seed mix?”

Just the sound of Matt’s voice made Celeste relax. She smiled at him. “Based on the smell, I believe you’re right.”

“So you didn’t eat then? I was right!” Matt flopped onto her bed and lay down, his long body scrunching up the neat white comforter that she spent ten minutes arranging before she’d gone to school this morning. “I thought I’d take a break from studying and bring you something edible.”

“It smells like a burger from Mr. Bartley’s,” she said as she got up and took a seat next to Matt. “Hand it over, thoughtful brother.”

He tightened a hand around the top of the bag. “You have to guess which kind I brought you first.”

“How am I supposed to know?”

“Close your eyes.”

She did as instructed and felt him move the bag under her nose. Sweet, spicy... a bit garlicky. “Aha! Boursin cheese and bacon! The Mark Zuckerberg burger!”

“And sweet potato fries and a bottle of iced tea, but you win. A burger named after ‘the richest geek in America,’ as the restaurant calls him.”

“You will be the richest geek in America after you finish your Ph.D. Program,” Celeste said through a mouthful of fries.

“If M.I.T. doesn’t land me in a psych unit first.”

“You only have this year left to endure. And you will hardly find yourself in need of psychiatric care, Matthew. You are doing stupendously.”

“I’m scraping by.” Matt reached into the bag and grabbed a handful of fries and opened her iced tea.

“You are not ‘scraping by.’ You are assistant teaching classes, excelling in your own, and in all ways performing to standards that exceed even the high ones our mother set for you.” She frowned as he chewed on the fries. “Did you not eat?”

“I did. A Big Papi burger and a Fiscal Cliff. But you can never have enough sweet potato fries.”

“I have a finite amount of my own from which you are stealing. But I shall not complain because this was very kind of you.”

Matt chewed and studied her. “Are you okay?”

“Why do you ask?”

“No contractions. When you’re stressed out, they disappear.”

“I know. But most days I do not care to use them. If it is an effort, then I do not push.”

“Okay. I get it.” He chewed for a minute. “I heard your presentation went well. Did your friends like it?”

“It went marvelously. My friend Dallas took me aside to share quite the flow of compliments.”

“That’s great, Celeste.” He was downing half her iced tea.

“And then I bitch slapped her.”

Matt choked on the drink and desperately tried to clear his airway. “I’m sorry. You did what?”

She cocked her head. “I bitch slapped her.”

“That... that can’t be right,” he sputtered. “I mean, I hope it’s not.”

“I slapped my hand against her hand. Up in the air.” She looked at Matt blankly. “Is that not the right term?”

“Thank God, no, it’s not. I think you mean a high-five.”

“If you say so. Well, either way, it happened. You know I have trouble with colloquialisms, so I resent your shocked reaction.”

“I do know that about you, and I apologize.”

“Since we are on the subject, there is something else I would like for you to clarify.”

“Shoot.”

“What is meant by ‘nut bag’? Is that a testicular reference or merely the identification of a satchel of cashews or pecans?”

Matt groaned. “This conversation has gotten really weird. Could we just talk about— Wait a minute. Why are you asking me this? Did someone say that to you?” He looked angry.

Celeste picked at her fry. “No. Certainly not. I heard the term and had a natural curiosity.”

“Okay then...” Her brother crumpled up the paper bag and then smoothed it out in his hands. Then crumpled it again. “It’s the same as ‘nuts.’ You know, crazy.”

“Thank you for the definition.” She took the last bite of her burger and wiped her hands on one of the paper napkins. It shouldn’t matter what her classmates thought of her. Celeste would just be strong about this. She would move on.
