Review: My Hunger, by Lisa Renee Jones

Synopsis
An Inside Out Novella in Mark's POV

While Chris and Sara have traveled to Paris to avoid the chaos of press and police after the tragic night we’d shared, I have stayed to face the reality of what has happened. But there is no peace to be found in facing the truth, and no truth to be found in the confessions that have been made and retracted. I am a Master, all about control, and yet right now, facing great tragedy, I feel as if I have none. With my club and my relationships of the past in the spotlight, I find sanctuary in the one place I’ve promised I will never be again, but cannot seem to resist. Her arms.

***Mark and Crystal's story begins in the novella Master Undone.

Review
4.25 out of 5 stars

When I first read Rebecca's Lost Journals I wasn't really sure of my feelings for Mark.  Just like Rebecca I wondered what his true intentions were.  Whether or not he cared for her beyond the Master/Submissive relationship.  Was it possible he loved her but was in denial, or even aware his feelings were love?  Like Rebecca I wondered if he was capable of a real relationship, and if so what would one look like?  Rebecca's Lost Journals left me confused of my feelings towards Mark, but by the end of Master Undone I can say they weren't favorable (other than his love and respect for his parents, especially his mother.  I found their relationship touching, I liked seeing Mark's vulnerability).

Needless to say I went into this novella with mixed feelings, especially knowing it would be told completely from Mark's perspective.  Fortunately, I can say without a doubt I really enjoyed My Hunger.  Don't get me wrong, Mark still very much remains a mystery but I came away from the experience feeling as though I possibly understood him a bit better.  Well, maybe understanding is the wrong word (even being inside his head I still felt he was somewhat closed off), but I did very much enjoy his perspective.

My Hunger provided the perfect opportunity to see just how deep his feelings for Rebecca truly ran.  To see first hand how their relationship and subsequent ending to her disappearance completely wrecked not only his life but the control he craves, the control he depends on to get him from one day to the next.  My Hunger provided a valuable experience, it allowed a small peek into the mystery that is Mark Compton.  In allowing readers to watch as Mark reminiscences through his time with Rebecca, to see him finally admit his feelings, to see this vulnerability first hand makes him a more lovable character.  It was like I finally was able to see for myself the man Rebecca feel in love with.

I was left craving more of his story, I wasn't ready for my time with him to be over.  To me, Mark has always been such a mystery and I feel like My Hunger was just the tip of the iceberg of discovery as to who Mark Compton really is.  Rebecca changed Mark, there's no doubt she was a good influence, but I think Crystal is proving to be an even better one.  Mark needs someone to challenge him, to help him loosen up on his need for control.  Mark's feelings for Rebecca cracked open emotions, emotions he tried to keep from having, but I think Crystal is going to push open the floodgates and I cannot wait to see the unraveling and rebuilding.  I wonder at the end what Mark's going to be like?  My Hunger left me hungry for more time with Mark, I cannot wait to dive deeper into this complicated, mystery of a man!

I was provided a copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
