Review:

First of all, we need to tell you that The Mystic Series is so fantastic.  It is the BEST paranormal romance we have read since Twilight.  It is different in the aspect that the characters are older and not in high school. There are no vampires or werewolves either.    There is no love triangle, however that doesn’t take away from this story.  There is still a ton of great steamy romance in this series.  The best thing about this series in my opinion, is Layla.  She is strong and independent, humble, fiercly compassionate and is not your typical damsel in distress.  She encompasses the qualities you would want your own daughter to have.

Descension, what is the first book about really?  It is all about Layla’s descent into the magical world of witches and wizards, that she has unknowingly lived outside of for the last 21 years.  (Please note, just because this has witches and wizards do not automatically associate it with Harry Potter.  We loved the Harry Potter series, but this is totally different and you should definatley give it a try.)  Layla grew up in OK, with her single mom.  She has never really had a life because when she was 18, her mom had a massive stroke and Layla has spent the last 3 years working and taking care of her mother.  2 months prior to her 21st birthday, her mom Katherine passed away.  The day after her 21st birthday Layla finally works up the nerve to go see her mother’s lawyer to retrieve one last possession left from Katherine.  What she learns from the possession will change her life so much more than she could ever have imagined.  After discovering secrets about her past, Layla decides to set out on a course to gain some answers about her true identity.  While traveling in Oregon, she meets Quin.

The first encounter Layla has with Quin is so amazing.  When you feel from one glance like you’ve been “X-rayed, and peered straight into your soul”, that’s one hell of a first impression.  Quin is a tall, bronzed, gorgeous specimen of a man.  But he is also very mysterious and seems too good to true.  He is the epitome of a gentleman and seems to always know what she needs.  There are so many questions that Layla needs answered, but will she be able to accept the unknown?  And where does Quin fit into the picture?  Perhaps the biggest threat to Layla is the evil lurking and searching to destroy and control her.  Will good conquer evil?  Or will evil destroy Layla’s life too?
B.C. Burgess paints such vivid descriptions of the magical world that exists beyond the humand world.  She is amazing at setting scenes and sucking you into the story immediately.  You know you have discovered a fantastic author/series when you read three books in one weekend, starting and finishing one right after the other.  This series is fun, mysterious, magical and romantic.  We loved it from cover to cover!

Review:

First things first, if you have not read Descension do not read any more of this review.  It will contain spoilers from the first book and we do not want to ruin any of this fantastic series for anyone!  Impassion begins the day after Descension ends.  There is no lag time, which we love.  That means we never miss a moment of Layla’s journey.  You have been warned.

Impassion begins with Layla struggling to come to grips with the deaths of her parents.  Due to the dramatic way she learned of her own birth and subsequently her parent’s death, it was as if she were actually watching it happen in real time.  It is hard for her to not blame herself and move past this horrible event that took place over 21 years ago.  On the other hand, she now knows and understands how great her parents’ love for her truly was…they made the ultimate sacrifice and died to protect her.  Armed with that knowledge, Layla vows to always appreciate things around her, no matter how small and live life to the fullest with no regrets.

We are also learn more about the other members of the coven, including Layla’s grandparents.  With the knowledge of her being a double bonded witch, she is now in more danger than ever.  As Layla begins to delve more into the magical world, it becomes evident that her magical abilities are second to none.  With training and time, she is on her way to becoming the most powerful witch around.  Now that Layla’s eyes are open to her true identity, she is even more scared for her family.

Argo is out searching high and low in Idaho, Oregon and surrounding areas.  He uses everything possible in hopes of capturing Layla.  He feels utter embarrassement because Aadean, Layla’s father, tricked him into believing that Layla never existed.  This is a huge blow to his ego and now that he knows she has been living in the shadows in Oklahoma for 21 years his fury knows no bounds.  He will let nothing stand in his way of retrieving what he believes is rightfully his.  He knows that once Layla is trained in magic she would be his most powerful weapon in the Unforgivables army.  Will he succeed in locating Layla and forcing his plans on her?  Or will a mysterious stranger beat Argo to Layla and force her into his own evil scheme?  Which one is the greater evil?

Quin and Layla have a powerful attraction that is undeniable by both of them.  Each moment they are together, their desire for one another as well as their friendship grows.  Layla struggles with Quin’s playboy past, her greatest fear, being history repeating itself like it affected her parents.  In addition to these fears, a new wizard, Finley arrives on the scene causing trouble for this budding romance.  It seems like he is attracted to Layla in a sick stalker way.  He challenges Quin’s every word and really gets under your skin.

If it is even possible, we love these characters more than we did in the first book.  Quin makes us melt every time he speaks to Layla.  We love that Layla finally has found a family and is experiencing happiness for the first time in many years.  She never fails to surprise us with her selflessness.  It is such a great love story that not only encompasses romance but the family ties that bond us all.

Review:

Hopefully, by now you know, if you have not read Descension and Impassion do not read any further.  We will have to kick your butt otherwise.  Don’t spoil these books for yourself.  Trust us they are too good. Now, on to the review!

Deception begins right after the horrible attack on Layla by Argo’s number one man.  I was freaking out a little for Layla when she was attacked but am glad she was rescued and luckily magicians can heal really quickly.  I love how Impassion ended with Quin and Layla admitting they love each other!  Praise God its about time!  Now if only they could find the time to consummate this relationship we would be estatic.

Unfortunately, Layla’s rescuer, Finley, wants nothing more than to gloat about his ability to protect Layla.  Since he has announced that he is double bonded like Layla, he seems to feel like he is entitled to everything and everyone being at his beacon call.  He really tries to make a play for Layla’s affections, which does nothing more than alienate him.  Layla is pretty up front in the fact that she is in love with Quin and the enticement of power does nothing to sway her.

Layla comes face to face with the evil searching her out.  Who will find her first?  Argo or the stranger?  How will she react to the threat and who will be left to protect the coven?

While this book is full of nail biting intensity and drama, this is still a romantic story unlike any other we have read before.  The feelings that Quin and Layla share are so intense it is easy to lose yourself in the story and just feel their emotions.  We love that while Quin and Layla are strong individually, together, they seem unbreakable.  Their relationship grows by leaps and bounds in this book and it is so refreshing to get to see them enjoy each other in normal, everyday activities.  We are introduced to some of Quin’s friends and old flames, which only add to the story.

BC Burgess is a fantastic author who paints the most beautiful vivid stories.  It is as if you don’t even see the words on the page, but the scenes unfolding before your eyes instead.  We would love to tell you everything about this book, but feel it would ruin the experience for you.  Trust us you don’t want to miss out!  Also, once you have read all three books, treat yourself to some teasers by clicking here.  We are anxiously awaiting the release of Retribution in September!
